Self-knowledge is the key to navigating decisions mindfully, managing emotions effectively, and improving interactions and relationships. Understanding the importance of knowing yourself sets the foundation for building a more fulfilling life.
Even though we spend every breathing moment with ourselves, self-knowledge is not a given. Organizational psychologist and self-awareness expert Tasha Eurich discovered that a mere 10-15% of participants she studied actually fit the criteria for self-awareness. But why is that number so low?
Our busy lives often require us to step out of our minds and bodies and operate on autopilot. This fosters disconnection from ourselves, making us feel detached from our physical bodies and thoughts.
On top of that, the constant hustle to fulfill numerous roles and external expectations creates even more distance from the self.
This article is for you if you want to create more mindfulness and build a stronger connection with yourself. We will analyze the importance of knowing yourself and reveal practices for improving self-knowledge.
What Does It Mean To Know Yourself?
What does it mean to know yourself? A simple yet very complex question.
Is it about knowing your preferences, your values, and beliefs? Does it mean being mindful of your thoughts and feelings? Or is it being aware of who you are and who you want to be?
We will find the answer in this incredibly insightful article by Christina Wilson of Positive Psychology, who extensively browses through the psychological research on self-knowledge.
According to Morin and Racy, self-knowledge is the information you possess about yourself, which includes your emotional state, personality traits, relationships, behavioral patterns, opinions, beliefs, values, needs, goals, preferences, and social identity.
Self-knowledge results from a combination of introspection and interaction with our environment. Apart from self-reflection, we also understand more about ourselves through societal roles and expectations, external feedback, and comparison to others.
What Is The Importance Of Knowing Yourself?
In our previous session, my amazing therapist told me something that stood out to me: “The only person you will truly be with for your entire life is yourself, not your friends, partners, or even parents.”
Even though we subconsciously accept this truth, I don’t think we realize its heavy meaning. It highlights the importance of building a solid relationship with ourselves, and there is no way to do that without embracing self-knowledge.
So, what is the importance of knowing yourself?
You Identify Your Strengths And Weaknesses
Self-knowledge means you can pinpoint what you excel at and areas where you may need improvement. Recognizing these aspects empowers you to leverage your strengths and work on areas of growth.
You Recognize Your Stressors And Coping Mechanisms
Understanding your triggers and how you respond to them is crucial for managing stress effectively. Self-knowledge allows you to steer away from unhealthy coping mechanisms and choose constructive means of expressing negative emotions.
This way, you can mitigate the impact of everyday stressors on your well-being, leading to better psychological regulation.
You Align Your Life With Your Values
Through improving your self-knowledge, you become clearer on your personal beliefs and values. This allows you to stand for them and ensure that your actions and decisions align with them. Living according to your values brings a sense of purpose and fulfillment to your life.
You Decide On Your Goals And Dreams
Part of knowing yourself better is finding your life’s purpose. When you understand who you aspire to become and what you aspire to do in your life, you infuse your daily actions with intention and passion.
Most importantly, by understanding yourself deeply, you can discern between goals and aspirations that genuinely resonate with you and those influenced by external pressures. This clarity allows you to pursue paths that are truly meaningful to you.
You Understand Your Boundaries
Knowing yourself includes recognizing your limits, both emotionally and physically. Establishing and maintaining boundaries is essential for preserving your well-being and fostering healthy relationships with others.
You Understand The Reasons Behind Your Actions And Reactions
By gaining self-knowledge, you unravel the roots of internalized behaviors and trauma responses. By delving into these underlying factors, you understand why you may react in seemingly “unreasonable” or “over-the-top” ways in certain situations.
This understanding allows you to predict your behaviors in certain situations and, therefore, adjust your exposure to certain stimuli or your reaction to them.
You Detach Your Self-Worth From The Perception Of Others
When you possess a deep understanding of yourself, you become less reliant on external validation and more secure in your own identity. This independence from others’ perceptions and opinions gives you the freedom to express authentically.
What Are The Benefits Of Knowing Who You Are?
You Embrace A Growth Mindset
Self-knowledge involves recognizing areas for personal improvement and pinpointing the necessary changes. On one side, you acknowledge that perfection is an unrealistic standard, allowing yourself room for growth without harsh judgment. And on the other side, you adopt the mindset of always moving forward, ensuring you never remain stagnant.
The growth mindset also promotes resilience and perseverance, allowing you to view challenges as opportunities for learning and development.
You Regulate Your Emotions More Effectively
By understanding your triggers and reaction patterns, you can prevent exposure to stressful situations or learn how to handle them more effectively. Having the power to manage your emotions creates a sense of control and security.
Also, you identify helpful coping strategies that work for you and learn how to implement them into your life. Whether it’s talking to a friend, engaging in creative outlets like dancing or drawing, or seeking professional therapy, it equips you with the tools for emotional regulation.
You Forge Healthy Relationships
Self-knowledge includes setting boundaries, identifying your love language, understanding and honing your communication style, and cultivating empathy. All these different aspects are crucial for developing healthy and flourishing relationships.
Setting boundaries ensures that your needs and limits are respected, effective communication facilitates understanding and connection, while empathy nurtures compassion and mutual respect.
You Navigate Wiser Decisions
Self-knowledge arms you with intention and direction. Knowing your goals and how to serve your best interests allows you to make mature and informed decisions. By aligning your choices with your values and aspirations, you steer your life in a direction that resonates authentically with who you are. This mindful way of decision-making saves you from doubt and regret.
You Become More Confident
You have definitely heard the phrase, “Confidence comes from within.” It’s true that self-sourced validation is more powerful and sustainable than external validation. By embracing your strengths, acknowledging your limitations, and accepting yourself unconditionally, you detach your sense of self-worth from your achievements or the praise of others.
This inner confidence empowers you to pursue your aspirations boldly and authentically, challenging the fear of judgment and rejection.
You Grow More Independent
A vital aspect of knowing yourself includes identifying your physical and emotional needs and understanding how to fulfill them. This self-sufficiency gives you ownership of your well-being and allows you to rely less on others.
How To Learn Yourself Better?
The benefits and importance of knowing yourself are not to be disregarded. However, shedding your outdated self-perception and discovering yourself anew might be easier said than done. The good news is that self-discovery is a never-ending journey, and it’s never too late to begin.
Here are seven practices to get to know yourself better:
1. Be Honest, But Don’t Judge
Begin the journey of self-discovery with a promise to be honest with yourself. There is no point in shying away from our weaknesses, tough spots, and mistakes. Acknowledging the “misunderstood” parts of ourselves is the first step towards accepting, loving, and – if it serves us – changing them.
However, make sure that you maintain an open mind and a kind heart. Keep your inner critic in check, and don’t judge yourself harshly. Treat yourself like you would treat your best friend, with unconditional acceptance and compassion.
2. Do Free Writing Exercises
My therapist proposed this exercise to me; she called it “The Unknown Me.” You create a comfortable and private environment, ensure you have enough time to spare, and sit down with a notebook in hand.
Ask yourself, “Who am I?” or “How would I describe myself,” and then pour every thought that comes through onto paper. Avoid micromanaging your writing and let it flow unfiltered and free.
3. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the antidote to our hectic way of living. It creates a necessary pause, allowing us to slow down and return to the present moment. Even if we have switched off our minds, we return to our bodies, thoughts, and sensations.
There are many ways to practice mindfulness, including breathing exercises, meditation, or DBT techniques. You can find a wealth of free and paid resources online tailored to your needs. Apps like Headspace or podcasts like The Skillful Podcast can be a good starting point.
4. Keep A Self-Knowledge Journal
Journaling is an excellent tool for enhancing self-knowledge. It creates a window to your thoughts and feelings. By pouring your mind out, you release some emotional tension and get into the shoes of the observer, looking into your entries with a more objective perspective.
Use your journal as a space to reflect on your experiences, insights, and observations about yourself. Write about your goals, values, and aspirations, as well as any challenges or obstacles you encounter along the way. Regularly revisiting your journal allows you to track your progress and gain deeper insights into your evolving sense of self.
You can get started using journal prompts based on the subject you want to dive deeper into. You can find an entire category on the blog with all our great suggestions to get your journaling habit going.
5. Discover Your VITALS
Meg Selig of Psychology Today introduced the acronym VITALS to summarize the six vital elements of self-knowledge. It stands for Values, Interests, Temperament, Around-the-clock activities, Life mission and meaningful goals, and Strengths.
- Values: According to Meg, values are the motivators for your decisions and goals, keeping you consistent even in the face of challenges. Ensuring that you live by your values creates intention and perseverance.
- Interests: Your interests are the activities that capture your attention and make you feel passionate. By exploring them, you open yourself up to new opportunities, even your ideal job.
- Temperament: Temperament describes your innate preferences and tendencies. It involves your energy givers and takers, optimal way of living and working, etc.
- Around-the-clock activities: This refers to your natural “biorhythms,” the shifts in your energy throughout the day. Consider whether you are a morning or night person and pinpoint the time of the day when you feel more energized and productive. Understanding your temperament and biorhythms allows you to optimize your daily life by personalizing it.
- Life mission: Meg encourages us to discover what gives us purpose by considering the most meaningful events in our lives. What were they, how did they make us feel, and why?
- Strengths: This refers to owning up to your strong points, including skills, talents, and personality traits. Meg proposes that leveraging your strengths and working on your weaknesses can invite unexpected opportunities in your personal and professional life.
6. Explore New Things
Test the waters by stepping out of your comfort zone and challenging yourself in unfamiliar situations. Start by uncovering something you always wanted to do but never did due to fear or insecurity. It can be a new hobby, exploring a different culture, or going to a networking event.
By observing yourself explore new experiences, you gain deeper insights into your preferences, personality, or abilities. You’ll never know if you like something unless you try it. You’ll never know what you are capable of unless you do it. Allow your curiosity to expand your horizons and defy your limiting beliefs.
7. Try Therapy
Therapy has been a precious tool in helping me understand and accept myself. Sometimes, we cover our truth under layers and layers of protective mechanisms.
A therapist can provide guidance, support, and a safe space for exploring your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. You can uncover the layers through therapy, reveal underlying patterns, heal past wounds, and develop healthy coping strategies.
